Nestled in the Andean foothills near the Equator, Quito is one of the world’s highest capital cities at 9,350 feet above sea level. Its UNESCO-listed Old Town, founded on an ancient Inca settlement, is filled with colourful plazas, magnificent churches and beautifully preserved colonial architecture. Rich in history, culture and Andean charm, Quito offers a fascinating introduction to Ecuador.
Today, fly to Baltra Island in the spectacular Galápagos archipelago and embark on your expedition cruise. This afternoon, begin exploring with a visit to Cerro Dragón, or Dragon Hill, on the northwestern coast of Santa Cruz Island. A walk past a brackish lagoon reveals a haven for shorebirds and American flamingos, while the trail inland offers sweeping views across the archipelago and the chance to spot the iconic Galápagos land iguana in its natural habitat.
This morning, explore Punta Vicente Roca on the northwestern tip of Isabela Island, where dramatic volcanic cliffs provide a habitat for flightless cormorants, Galápagos penguins and boobies. Weather permitting, there is an opportunity to snorkel among green sea turtles, ocean sunfish and playful fur seals. Later, discover Fernandina Island, one of the most pristine islands in the archipelago, renowned for its large population of marine iguanas, as well as sea lions, Sally Lightfoot crabs and Galápagos penguins.
Today, discover Santa Cruz Island, home to the renowned Charles Darwin Research Station and its giant tortoise breeding centre. See the famous finches that helped shape Darwin’s theory of evolution, then venture into the island’s lush highlands, where giant tortoises roam freely among the greenery. There may also be an opportunity to explore further, whether by mountain bike or with a visit to a traditional sugar plantation.
Today, explore Floreana Island, beginning with a small boat cruise along the north shore and views across the scenic waters of Baroness Cove. Visit historic Post Office Bay, where a wooden barrel has served as an informal postal service for more than 200 years. Later, discover the wildlife-rich waters around Champion Islet and Cormorant Point, with opportunities to snorkel, spot American flamingos and stroll between an olivine-crystal beach and a tranquil lagoon.
Take the morning to unwind as your expedition ship anchors off Baltra Island. Take advantage of the onboard facilities, browse the library or simply relax and soak up the scenery before the next stage of your Galápagos adventure. Later, visit Las Bachas on Santa Cruz Island, a beautiful white-sand beach where flamingos, sea turtles and other iconic wildlife can often be spotted, with opportunities for swimming and snorkelling in the crystal-clear waters.
Continue your expedition on Santiago Island, where dramatic cliffs, secluded coves and striking rock formations create a spectacular coastal landscape. Explore Buccaneer Cove, a haven for marine birds and sea lions, with opportunities to experience the island from the water. Later, visit Puerto Egas, renowned for its colony of Galápagos fur seals, abundant birdlife and snorkelling waters frequented by marine turtles.
Begin your day on Rábida Island, renowned for its striking red-sand beach and abundant wildlife. Keep watch for sea lions, marine iguanas, mockingbirds and several species of Darwin’s finches as you explore the shoreline and coast. Later, discover Bartolomé Island and its iconic Pinnacle Rock, with opportunities to swim, snorkel and spot Galápagos penguins before taking in panoramic views from the island’s summit.
Today, arrive at Genovesa Island, a remote haven for some of the Galápagos’ most fascinating birdlife. A short climb at Prince Philip’s Steps leads to a rocky plateau where Nazca boobies, red-footed boobies, great frigatebirds and storm petrels nest in large colonies, while kayaking offers a different perspective of the island’s rugged coastline. Later, visit Darwin Bay, where a beautiful beach and calm waters provide opportunities for swimming, snorkelling, kayaking and observing the island’s abundant wildlife.
Conclude your Galápagos expedition on Santa Cruz Island, where a visit to the lush highlands offers one final opportunity to observe giant tortoises roaming freely in their natural habitat. This protected reserve is also home to dense forests of Galápagos daisies, orchids and bromeliads, providing a fitting farewell to the archipelago’s remarkable landscapes and wildlife.
